Bandai Namco has finally revealed their first trailer for the upcoming JRPG, Code Vein. The company had been hinting at it for the past week, but today is finally the day where we get to see it for the first time. While this is more of a gameplay trailer, we get to see some of the cutscenes in very early stages and the work they've done so far looks pretty incredible.
After your first glance at the combat, it's very clear to see that this game was heavily influenced by the fighting style of the Dark Souls series. With attack patterns changing with each enemy, you must track their movements and plan your style of attack accordingly. Keep in mind, however, this is just a first glance. It is quite possible that the game could turn into a hack-and-slash type game, more similar to the Devil May Cry series. Although that doesn't appear to be the case here, it wouldn't be the first time that a game's final form didn't match the portrayal in the pre-release trailers.
Although I don't expect the game to deviate from the expected Dark Souls mechanics, I'm hoping that Code Vein does come up with a way to make their combat system unique. If they are able to implement a difficult, skill-based fighting system with a personal twist, this could easily be a game to remember for years to come. I have high hopes for Bandai Namco with this title and I'm very excited to see more trailers in the near future. For now, this is what we have to work with and this very small sneak peek has me pretty excited for Code Vein's release.
Bandai Namco has not released the list of consoles that Code Vein will be released on, however, they have stated that it will be available on major home consoles. We can safely assume that PS4 and Xbox One will be included on this list, with the likely possibility of a PC release, and a less likely possibility of a Nintendo Switch version. No release date has been set for the game and more details will be posted up as soon as they are revealed to us.
