It might be too soon to say that video game adaptions are the new “thing”, but with the success of the Witcher (which is only popular thanks to the video games, fight me) and Castlevania on Netflix, I’m sure more than a few studios are looking to capitalize on well-known IP for their next big television or streaming projects. And while we all have dream projects we would love to see made (remember when that rumor was circulating that Nintendo was going to make a Game of Thrones-like Legend of Zelda series?) most of us aren’t in a position to make those ambitions a reality.
But most of us aren’t writer and co-creator of John Wick Derek Kolstad, who in an interview with comicbook.com, revealed that he’s actually pitching two TV shows based on video games – just not the video games you might be expecting.
His dream, it seems, is to bring My Friend Pedro and Bendy and the Ink Machine to the small screen.
Bendy and the Ink Machine, an indie horror game about a former animator trying to survive his creation coming to life as a sort of ink-based demon, makes enough sense for a TV show, given the game had quite a bit of lore between the lines spread across its many episodes, plus a strong cast of recognizable characters. Heck, the plot could probably go for a re-write too, considering most people didn’t care for the way the game officially ended.
My Friend Pedro, about a dude with a skateboard killing people at the whims of his talking banana pal, probably wouldn’t offer much in the way of compelling storytelling, but if there’s one thing Castlevania has taught us, fun fight scenes don’t really need a coherent and/or good plot around them to be enjoyable.
Either way, he’s only pitching the scripts: the very start of a long, uncertain process. If these do get made, it’ll be a long time before we see the fruits of his labor.
Still, cool.
