The now iconic director, producer and writer recently participated in a discussion at the DICE 2013 summit with Valve co-founded Gabe Newell in which they revealed that the two are in preliminary talks to develop movies based on the popular video game franchises Half-Life and Portal.
Abrams said that both franchises are ripe for exploration on the big screen and his team is working with Valve to see how they could potentially put these on the big screen. Here's some excerpts of their discussions;
"[The games are] as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets... which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas. Our goal here to is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script -- just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with."
Abrams also said he'd also like to see Bad Robot work with Valve to co-develop a video game. But he clarified they want to make a 'real' game, not some film-esque extension into the medium:
"We're not looking to make a movie in the gaming world, we're not looking to impose what we do on that, we're looking forward to taking some of our strengths and collaborating with some of these incredible minds that make some of my favorite games."
So this does sound like some exciting news.. What say you?
