Well, on May 26th, Japan will be receiving its last set of badges. While that may sound sad and like the demise of the Nintendo Badge Arcade, it's not. The shop won't be closing, your badges won't disappear (imagine if that was the case... I can see the rage), and the machines will change daily. Just... well no new badges. However, the very rare badges will be coming back.

As for the reason there are no new badges? Because the save data has passed its limit. Wow. Apparently, there was only enough save data for 1,000 badges in the badge case. According to Japanese Nintendo:

"The reason the badge case can only go to 1,000 is because of the limitations of the Nintendo 3DS! Its because of the way the memory is divided! Its different from the SD Card memory! Its dependent on the amount of work can be done at once! Imagine doing some work on a desk! The 1,000 different set of badges have filled up the desk! Theres no more space to work with! During development, weve tried increasing the badge case over 1,000but the 3DS crashed!

We were able to make it barely work with this limit! Since we cant increase the 3DS memory, we are unable to make new badges!"

Well, there you go. Because hardware limitations.
