Dragon Quest, the popular RPG series, is getting its own CGI feature film. Just last week, the first trailer for the movie was released in Japan. But people aren't exactly happy about it.
According to a report by Nifty News, The upcoming Dragon Quest: Your Story, a film based on Dragon Quest V, has seen an influx of negativity from internet commenters and fans. Their criticisms start with the studio choosing movie and TV personalities over proper voice actors. Many feel that the film producers are choosing to maximize marketability over making the best creative decisions. Compare it to Will Smith as the Genie in the Aladdin Remake.

The other common complaint is in regards to the visual styling. The film appears to have the standard 3D anime look, sacrificing Akira Toriyama's famous style. Toriyama was the main man behind the visual design of the Dragon Quest series, yet he doesn't appear in the film credits at this time. To see this style absent was upsetting to many folks.
According to the sources, the change in style was due to Toriyama's cute characters and cute monsters conflicting with the movies heavy story and a desire to have the movie gain traction outside of Japan.
Granted, if you post anything on the internet, there will be an army of people battle ready to call it the worst thing ever. Currently, Dragon Quest: Your Story is only coming to Japan in August. But it sounds like they have plans for an international release. Stay tuned.
