The Borderlands movie continues to be a thing, despite common sense, fans of good taste, and God themselves trying to get in the way of production. Last we heard, Keven Hart, unfunny comedian but certified black person, was given the role of Roland, the straight-talking soldier-man from the original game, to be joined by Cate Blanchette as Lillith, despite the fact she could be doing literally anything else with her time that would bring more value to the human race.
And now we have our third cast member: and since I’d wager money — real life money — that Gearbox is still trying to get enough money to bribe The Rock into play Brick, the next cast member isn’t actually part of the Vault Hunter gang. Rather, it’s been announced that Jamie Lee Curtis, another person who’s way too good for this, will be playing Tannis, the socially awkward and borderline insane Vault expert from the series.
We also know that in this movie script, apparently Lillith and Tannis have a history that didn’t exist in the games. Which suggests that there might be some serious deviations from the story of the game and the script of the movie… which, as far as I’m concerned, can only be good news.
One thing that is becoming more and more clear, however, is that a lot of big names are signing up for this bad boy — bigger names than I would have guessed, in any case. I can only speculate as to what’s drawing to them to this project: I doubt it’s the IP alone, since Borderlands doesn’t actually have much penetration into the mainstream market the way that, say, Pokemon does. Maybe the script is impressive, or maybe they’re convinced that this will be the start of a franchise that can rival other nerd IP’s that have been dominating the moviescape lately.
Who can say? Not me. I care just enough to exert the energy to hate on it, and that’s about it.
