Darkest Dungeon broke away from crowdfunding and became a massive smash hit a year ago, and a lot has happened since this tough-as-nails RPG has stormed Steam. The game is currently enjoying massive sales, having shipped 1.25 million copies around the world, and it’s even getting a new expansion, The Crimson Court, which adds new enemies, items, afflictions, and a new zone, in May/early June of this year. It’s a great time to delve the dungeons around your accursed estate (at least, if you don’t have to go there personally), and now it’s just gotten better… or worse.

Because the official Steam Workshop for the game has just launched! That means that you have easy access to a whole host of mods that will make the game harder, easier, or just plain different crafted by the community. Already, the game’s steam workshop page is fit to burst with new content, from AI improvement to new classes… developer Red Hook has even said it’s pretty much open season, allowing for mods that change "hero classes, monsters, items, dungeons, and core game rules such as torchlight modifiers and XP rewards." So basically nothing is off the table, which is always good for mods.

And to celebrate, steam is offering Darkest Dungeons at 50 percent off of the original pricing over the weekend, and the company will stream some featured mods over twitch on April 7, at 5 PM ET. Sounds like a ghoulish good time!

In my mind, one of the best features a game can have is workshop support and a community of people who are excited to take advantage of it. Workshop support is the main reason I prefer Torchlight 2 over Diablo 3, for example, and the smattering of mods available for games like Age of Wonders 3 keeps them fresh for years to come. I’m sure it’ll be no different for Darkest Dungeons.
