Full disclosure, guys: I’m a Nintendo Fanboy. I may not have a Wii U, I may not have a 3DS, I may not participate in Twitch Plays Pokémon, but since they were my childhood (Nintendo Power and waiting for Custom Robo in the mail was pretty much everything I remember from 8-14) I still get giddy when it comes to Nintendo properties. So this has been a very good day for me.
Let me share with you some of my jovial glee.
DID YOU SEE THAT?! THAT WAS MIDNA!!!
*ahem* excuse me. Now, this puts me in something of a minority, but I’m actually quite excited for Hyrule Warriors. I know the company behind it has something of a reputation thanks to the iffy reception of Dynasty Warriors, and I’m as aware as anyone that the last time Nintendo loaned one of their IP to an outside company the results were an unmitigated disaster, but this still looks like it could be a lot of fun. In many ways, it reminds me of an “official” version of Hyrule Total War mod that’s so popular for Medieval 2: Total War—except instead of directing armies, you’re hacking right through them.
Plus, it really puts the “power” in Gannon’s third of the triforce. Instead of fragmenting his armies through dungeons spread across the land, he’s brought them all to bear—that sounds fun!
Anyway, the trailer reveals a few new characters that we can play in addition to Link, who was the first one revealed. Zelda, unsurprisingly, joins the battlefield, as well as her protector and servant Impa. But most excitingly, as I pointed out in call caps just above, is the re-introduction of Midna, everyone’s favorite twilight imp. I admit, it would have been cooler to see her in her full body, but I’ll take this.
You know, Nintendo has been making it harder and harder not to own a Wii U these days. Looks like I might need to start saving my pennies.
