Do any of you miss the old days of printed video game magazines? In their crisp glory, magazines were often stuffed with a variety of goodies, ranging from mini-walkthroughs to cheat codes to snazzy reviews. Many magazines were infused with lots of love and created plenty of gossip among the community. But since the advent of the internet, printed magazines have unfortunately been going the way of the dodo. After all, these magazines cost money, and reviews and news are accessible for free on hundreds of sites. But some zines are still hanging in there, such as PC Gamer (though they have both a strong site and a magazine, and they deserve a kudos cookie for such).

Despite this, I'm sure many of you can't help but miss the feel of good old paper in your hands and the ability to flip pages. Not only that, but you just miss the retro aspects of gaming in its entirety. Well, the fanzine HyperPlay RPG is attempting to bring that retro feel back. Today, copies of Issue 0 of the HyperPlay RPG fanzine have been selling on eBay, though unfortunately, all these copies sold like hotcakes, leaving behind an empty stock (I was VERY lucky to snag a copy).

At the time, each zine featured a pay-what-you-like option (minimum of £0.99) if you made an offer, but you're mostly paying for the shipping anyway. Either way, a bit more about the fanzine.

The fanzine features this very interesting tidbit to kick off the launch:

"Something tangible to hold, something to enjoy away from a bright screen at the end of the day. The warm glow of nostalgia, of a childhood enthralled by Super Play and fanzines like Role Call, rediscovered."

Not a lot of fanzines nowadays encompass the glory of retro RPGs, and this zine aims to do just that. What comes with every issue are RPG reviews from platforms such as SNES and Xbox, Nintendo reviews (even current games), book reviews relating to gaming, other reviews focusing on retro game bars, peripherals, etc., features, retrospectives, eBayWatch, "How To" guides, competitions, reader offers, guest contributions (oh, I am SO game for that), and a letters page. All of this is awesome to look forward to, and I can't wait to personally get my hands on it.

Hopefully they will release more copies of the fanzine in the future, considering its high demand. Look forward to our review of the magazine in the next month!

I'm so giddy it features Final Fantasy IV and VI...
