So, before you get much out of this story, we need to backtrack a bit.

Team Ninja, developers behind the Dead or Alive games, have recently released a Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 in Japan--the Xtreme series being a spin-off of the DoA fighting game that focuses on the girls doing girly things in revealing clothing. The first two Xtreme games, when they were finished, were eventually localized over to the states, but earlier this month publisher Koei Tecmo said that Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 probably wouldn’t be. While they were a little coy about the reasoning, it didn’t really matter that much--no one really cared about Xtreme, and if you did, well, an english version was already on the Japanese disk so you just had to import it.

But then, when asked about localization for the US over facebook, this happened:

“Do you know many issues happening in video game industry with regard to how to treat female in video game industry? We do not want to talk those things here. But certainly we have gone through in last year or two to come to our decision. Thank you."

Bad english aside, it’s pinning a fear of controversy on the lack of an import, which… actually didn’t rustle as many jimmies as you’d expect, because, well, again: no one cares about DoA Xtreme. Still, it happened, and while most people don’t seem to care it’s been considered nothing short of a travesty to one Ryan Koons, owner of HoniePot Inc, the developer behind the puzzle/dating sim HoniePop, who has since gone on twitter to make the following series of announcements:

“Probably nothing to them but I'd give Koei Tecmo $1M for the rights to publish DOAX in the US. Let me take the heat.

100% serious. It's an extra million they otherwise wouldn't have. Seems like a no brainer to me. Let them know.

@KoeiTecmoUS I'll give you $1M for the rights to publish DOAX in the states. Serious offer, for whatever it's worth.”

He has since elaborated his position to The Escapist, claiming that he’s not making any grand political statements or trying to get the PR gears turning--he just really wants to publish the game. Not hard to see why, his company is certainly successful but it’s also quite small, and having a reputable, large game like Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 in their archives would be quite the boon.

Will Koei Tecmo accept his offer? I very much doubt it, the whole ‘we don’t want to get in trouble’ is the flimsiest excuse ever and I imagine the real reason is they anticipate poor sales but don’t want to just go out and say that. Still, if they do accept… that could mean a lot to HoniePot. Maybe not a lot to anyone else, since we don't care, but still.
