2014 and 2015 are the years of HD Remasters. We have seen countless HD Remastered editions of games from all types of consoles, whether it was a revamp of an original Sega Genesis game or a PlayStation 3 game. For example, Earthworm Jim HD has been released, but so hasn’t Grand Theft Auto 5 Remastered Edition (or Definitive) for the PlayStation 4, despite the PlayStation 3 version being released not long before.
I predict that in the nearby future, whenever Xbox One or PlayStation 4 game is released, a “Definitive” Edition will release not even a month later for the same console.
There is some interesting news, however, relating to a certain remastered collection. On February 25th, Gearbox Software will launch the legendary space RTS Homeworld – But this time, with eye-popping ultra 4K HD graphics and compatibility with modern operating systems.
For those that do not know, Homeworld is a sci-fi RTS that has been critically acclaimed by many as one of the best strategy series of all time. The Sierra-published game received several Game of the Year awards, even going so far as redefining the RTS genre.
At PAX South in San Antonio, Texas, Gearbox Software presented the Remastered Collection, also announcing its release date and the price. Pre-orders are available on Steam for $29.75, a 15% discount of the full price ($34.99). The collection will include both Homeworld and Homeworld 2, remastered from the inside-out – the score, the graphics, textures, and models are all remastered. The games will also feature new voice recordings from the original cast.
Also included in the collection are the two original versions of Homeworld and Homeworld 2, complete with compatibility updates, and free access to the Homeworld Remastered Steam Multiplayer Beta, which will launch alongside Homeworld Remastered Collection.
Interestingly enough, Gearbox Software has paired with Blackbird Interactive to create an all-new entry in the Homeworld series for the PC, titled “Homeworld Shipbreakers.” Seems like a lot to take in for Homeworld fans.
