There are plenty of reasons to be anxious about Hogwarts Legacy, even though it’s not set to launch for a long time now and we’ve seen very little of the game itself. Namely, it’s the latest entry into the Harry Potter series, which is owned by J.K Rowling, a once-beloved creative figure who’s now less-than-beloved thanks to her attitude about transgender folks. Plus, not more than a week ago, we learned that the lead designer of the game had some strong anti-SJW and anti-feminist opinions that many feared would bleed into the game itself.
Well, there’s still no way to know for sure how inclusive the game is until it comes out, but one thing we do know is that apparently, due to some internal pushing, the game will include the option for you to make a “trasngender wizard” in your adventures in Hogwarts.
It’s not dissimilar to the system Cyberpunk 2077 has: when making a character, your voice is picked independently of your body, and you can pick your pronoun — in this case, either calling yourself a “wizard” or a “witch”. It’s not exactly the most comprehensive system, but it’s a promising start for a game that very much has the potential to be embroiled in politics in the other direction.
The question is, though, is if this is enough. While Cyberpunk 2077 got a lot of early hype for its presumed inclusiveness, the end product wasn’t exactly what everyone hoped it was. Indeed, the Trans inclusiveness bordered on fetishistic, and many within the trans community was dissatisfied with the arbitrary limitations put on hair and style based on your body’s gender. While Harry Potter won’t go nearly as far as Cyberpunk 2077 goes (you probably won’t be picking your genitals), maybe that’ll be a good thing…?
We’ve got a long wait before we find out, in any case.
