Hideo Kojima Doesn't Arrive to Receive his Own Award

I think I finally know what's going on.

So recently, Sony hosted it’s now annual Playstation Awards, a chance for the company to revel in the success and the accolades of games produced for its system. Now, there are several ‘tiers’ for how the awards work--there’s a ‘gold prize’, which is given to any game that ships at least 500,000 units, and a ‘platinum prize’ for any game that ships over a million. Additionally, general excellence is recognized with a User Choice award.

So, it’s an event, but it’s hardly a gala, and it’s pretty small compared to other award shows. That said, it’s still a public event, which usually means Konami’s own Hideo Kojima will be showing up, as excited as ever to get even more attention. Hard to blame him, all things considered.

Well, despite showing up at last year’s award show to receive the prizes Ground Zeroes won, and despite the fact that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain actually won both Platinum Prize and User Choice Award, he didn’t show up at this year’s award show either--and the rewards were instead accepted by a a Konami Representative lady. A perfectly nice woman, I’m certain, but decidedly not Hideo Kojima.

While there isn’t much news beyond that, the award show pretty much recognized exactly what you think it would, it’s still another chapter in Konami and Kojima’s confusing, messy, and terribly unclear divorce. Some people say he’s retired, others, merely on vacation, and it has been ages since we’d even seen the man in public…

...is he dead and Konami is just Weekend at Bernie-ing him?

...I think that’s it.
