Riot Games isn’t exactly anyone’s favorite company right now, given the current political climate, but since they don’t have the unabashed wrath of the whole internet descending upon them, they were allowed to celebrate their 10th anniversary more-or-less unabated. And if you happen to be a big fan of League of Legends, then you’ll probably be happy by what was shown off.
And it was a lot, so… brace yourselves.
First of all: after ten years of PC exclusivity, League of Legends is coming to mobile devices and consoles with a pseudo spin-off called League of Legends: Wild Rift. While still a MOBA, it’s got re-vamped controls, a different map, and a much smaller roster of legends (only 40, while the base game has 140) which will expand as the game develops. It’s still a ways away, with the earliest estimates being late 2020 but worth making a note of.
Secondly: they’re making a new free-to-play TCG called Legends of Runeterra, which basically just looks like Hearthstone. Also coming sometime in 2020 for PC and mobile devices.
Third of all: they’re making their own animated series.
Called “Arcane”, this looks to be the culmination of ten years of growth in the field of animation. While not the “best” in the field, Riot Games tends to produce pretty fantastic cinematics and trailers when they put their mind to it, so being able to see a fully-fledged animated series set in the League of Legends world is actually pretty exciting. It, too, is due sometime in 2020. And of course it’s about Jinx because god is dead.
You think we’re done? We’re not even close to done.
Fourth, as revealed but not expressly discussed in the livestream, we saw two other unnamed projects. One, a short clip of Darius and Ahri fighting, was from the frequently-discussed secret League of Legends fighting game that everyone and their mother knew about. A second, much more surprising clip showed three characters (one of which was clearly Blitzcrank) in what looked like a Diablo-style hack-and-slash game. As mentioned, these games weren’t discussed at length, but we know they’re at least in progress.
Fifth! Have you ever watched a professional match of League of Legends and thought “boy, I love watching other people play games, but it would be even better if I was playing a game about watching people play games”? Then Riot Games has exactly what you’re looking for: because apparently they’re making their own Football-manager like game where you manage a pro League of Legends game. And I am so bored by the very concept I refuse to devote any more time discussing it.
Sixth! Teamfight Tactics is coming to mobile devices. Great. Moving on.
Seventh: Riot Games is making a free-to-play hero shooter called Project: A. Not a whole lot is known about it right now, beyond the fact that it’s basically “Overwatch but without personality”, and that it’s the only project revealed that had actually nothing to do with the League of Legends universe. Anyway, there’s a video:
Magical.
And finally: the actual game League of Legends is getting some stuff too. For one, the 10-year celebration event will dish out some honestly high-quality loot to people who log in and play at least one game over the next few days. Here’s the full list of rewards:
• Day 1: Anniversary Icon, Emote, and Ward Skin
• Day 2: 6300 Blue Essence
• Day 3: Masterwork Chest + Hextech Key
• Day 4: Little Legends Rare Egg
• Day 5: 3000 Orange Essence
• Day 6: 4 Skin Shards
• Day 7: 25 Prestige Points
• Day 8: 200 Worlds 2019 Tokens
• Day 9: 2 Gemstones
• Day 10: Legendary Skin
• Day 11: Annie-versary + Birthday Border + Icon
Also, a brand-new champion, Senna, was announced, who’s apparently a “marksman support”. She’ll be coming around sometime next month.
And last but not least, some pre-season news was dropped, which includes details about what the next season of League of Legends will be like: we’re talking changes to the dragon, an updated map, and other stuff that nerds will probably care about. You can read up on that stuff here.
Now all Riot Games needs to do is not screw it up with sexism or undue political censorship, and we’re golden.
