With ODST, Guardians, and such, we've gathered that Halo has been steering away from numbered titles. But according to 343's Jeff Easterling and Chris Lee, Infinite is as "6" as a game can be for the series.
It began with Lee confirming that Infinite is a direct sequel to Halo 5: Guardians, but with a focus on Master Chief instead of Agent Locke. Combine this with a statement by Easterling in a recent Mixer broadcast, it's basically 6.
"It is Halo 6. You should just consider it Halo 6. Don't think of it as a weird prequel kind of thing. It's the next story. It's the next chapter in what is going on."
This is the first step in understanding what exactly Halo: Infinite will be about. We've heard scattered talk of technical details, such as the game being so ambitious, it needed its own engine. But as far as gameplay and story, we know very little. This gives us at least a stepping stone toward understanding.
It will be ambitious indeed, however. 343 previously stated that they're taking a new approach to things, looking to lead the game in "new and unexpected directions." Now only if we knew what they meant.
