Epic Games is dropping flex after flex this week, and what better way to cap the work week off than by making Grand Theft Auto V free on the Epic Games Store?

From now until May 21, GTA V is free to download and keep through the Epic Games Store on PC. Rumors and leaks implied that this would happen in the previous days, but not until this morning has it actually become available.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is the highest grossing piece of media of all time, having earned a lifetime revenue of around $6 billion. For reference, this is twice as much as Avengers: End Game, which made about $2.7 billion. It remains an incredibly popular title even today, despite having released seven years ago.

The game is so popular, in fact, that the Epic Games servers have been crashing all morning from the wave of people trying to download the game.

This is a huge power move that will definitely work in Epic's favor. They've been throwing free game after free game at players who are willing to use the Game Store. While some are more popular than others, they're normally not worth mentioning. However, this is an exception. Not that we're too surprised. Take-Two Interactive, the publishers of GTA V, have been very cozy with Epic for a while now, releasing major titles as Epic Games Store exclusives.

Earlier this week, Epic Games also unveiled the Unreal Engine 5, a major update to the critically acclaimed game engine. It boasted impressive graphical improvements, showing the potential of next-gen games.
