Grand Theft Auto 5 took the gaming world by storm when it released in 2013. But that was a long time ago. So why is the game seeing a spike in viewer interest this last month? Roleplaying!
According to a report by GamesIndustry.biz, market data cites GTAV as the 3rd most viewed game in total live hours. The newfound ranking is due to the game jumping from 10 million live hours to 58.2 million live hours since February.
The driving force behind this massive jump is actually a NoPixel server, where online players can engage in a number of role-playing focused activities thanks to a mod by FiveM. Instead of everyone driving fast cars and shooting pedestrians, players engage in the most civilian of actions, from golfing to paramedics to policemen to bus drivers.
Since the server is limited to 32 people at a time, demand for access has been phenomenal. Users have to wait in line to join the server and must adhere to their guidelines when playing.
Twitch Broadcasters have found growing viewership in participating in the server or others like it. One such example is Tangent, a real-life psychologist acting out the same job in-game, though in a more comedic manner.
If you're curious about how a roleplay server works or why everyone enjoys watching it, now is a great time to check it out for yourself.
