God of War has always been a successful series in some form or another (yes, even the crappy PSP games), so it was never a huge surprise when we discovered that the latest game in the series would be good. But what is surprising is that it was better than it had any right to be, as the developers decided to take a step back from Kratos’ original character, an impossibly angry yet horny antihero who just destroyed crap mindlessly and just kind of hoped it would work out, and turn him into something actually interesting. You know, vulnerable. With things that he cares about. With a plot that makes both him and his world at least kind of likable. All that junk.
But if you thought this was a one-time reboot, then you’re tragically mistaken my dear readers. As according to an interview with Kotaku, God of War director Cory Barlog revealed that he not only has plans for a sequel, he actually has plans for five more. And there’s one very small spoiler ahead so heads up on that if you want to go in completely blind.
Anyway. The statement was prompted by Kotaku writer Jason Schreier, who asked him about the fact that Odin was never seen in person in the game, despite being an antagonizing force. Cory explained that it was intentional, as he wanted to make Odin seem super scary for future games: and when asked how many that might be, we got that number. Five.
Now, everyone can agree the new God of War game is pretty good. But is it “five sequels” good? Not much out there is, and it’s hard to see God of War turning out that way either, particularly with everything that goes down. But, who knows? I’m not directing it. Maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised.
(Editor's Edit/Update: According to Cory Balrog's Twitter, as of yesterday, he stated, "I DO????" in response to this. To add: "ok. to be honest, 5 games would literally kill me. you can rest assured the reality is going to be more measured than the speculation in the @kotaku discussion." So I wouldn't expect five more iterations to happen.)
