God of War 2018 brought the series into an entirely new Pantheon of gods. When such an idea was introduced, it had fans thinking about what other worlds Kratos could explore, Egyptian lore being the biggest example. Thanks to some recently release concept art, we learn just how possible that outcome could have been.
Game director Cory Barlog was present at this year's Devcom, where he released some early concept art for the game. This art gave us a peek at what the game may have looked like, had it taken place in Egyptian mythology instead.
Barlog talked about how they came about choosing the final setting for the PS4 exclusive. He stated that there was a fair amount of complaint with many of the choices for the game. The most popular examples being the idea of Kratos being a father and having to perform fetch quests for Freya. They felt this wasn't the Kratos they were used to. In the end, they chose Norse mythology due to the greater focus it allowed for Kratos.

God of War, despite these complaints, would go on to become one of the best selling games of 2018, establishing itself as a potential Game of the Year winner early on. It's also the fastest selling PS4 exclusive ever, charting 3 million copies in only three days.
While we don't know what developer Santa Monica Studios is working on now, we can assume it's the next iteration of the Norse generation. They have five games planned, after all.
