It wasn’t exactly a Battleborn situation, but it was still pretty bad.
Perfect World, the studio behind the developer after it bought out and subsequently shut down Motiga, announced that despite outstanding support from an awesome community, it wasn’t big enough to continue supporting the title.
"Discontinuing Gigantic was not an easy decision. The game is a unique and exciting experience that captured many hearts and minds. Unfortunately, it did not resonate with as many players as we’d hoped. Over the last several months, the teams at Motiga and Perfect World looked into viable options to sustain Gigantic. However, the current state of the game has restricted options for further progress and relevant content updates, and delivering basic features while also fixing long-standing issues was more complicated than expected. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to find an impactful solution that would help Gigantic break through in a crowded market."
The game will end properly on July 31st, and during the lead-up to that period, every character will be free-to-play. This means, of course, that Heroes Packs and Rubies can no longer be purchased (and are effectively useless). But existing Rubies (as well as Crowns) will remain in the player’s account and can be spent at a discounted in-game store.
Between this and the shutdown of Paragon, it seems like MOBAs are getting culled as of late. Perhaps because the battle royal genre has shuffled in to take its place?
Let’s see how well Paladins does before we go that far.
