It even beat Pokemon Go by a wide margin.

When Genshin Impact first launched in September of 2020, I thought it was a mild curiosity that would capture popular fascination for a few weeks before fading into obscurity, to be outshined by the games that inspired it. Turned out, I was dead wrong: here we are, half a year later, and Genshin Impact isn’t just going strong, it’s turning out to be one of the most popular games in the world: as after six months, the mobile version alone has managed to rake in 1 billion dollars.

You read that right: billion. One, followed by nine zeroes. And that’s just for one of the many, many platforms that you can play this game on.

This data comes to us from the folks at Sensor Tower, who seem to be keeping a close watch on this title ever since people realized it was worth watching. In their report, they shared that people, on average, spend about 160 million dollars per month on Genshin Impact (again, on the mobile version specifically), with noticeable spikes in income when new characters launch. With this much money, they’re officially the fastest-growing mobile game on the planet, reaching the one billion mark a full three months faster than Pokemon Go, which had one of the most famous IP’s behind it.

It’s also the third most successful mobile game on the market, only behind PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings, both of which are much, much more popular in China then they are in the States.

Perhaps the best takeaway from this is that while China probably isn’t the future of “mainstream” gaming, it’s certainly the power player in the world of Mobile gaming. We also learned that Genshin Impat’s gatcha-style of monetization really, really works… to the dismay of gamers and unsurprise of psychologists worldwide.

Ya’ll need help.
