Here at Gamerz Unite, we think a lot about LAN. It's kinda our thing, if you couldn't tell. So we get excited when we see a current gen game support LAN. That's why we were pleased to see that Gears of War 4 includes an option for offline LAN. The guys at The Coalition sat down the Ars Techina to explain a lot of the behind the scenes info about the game. It takes them a while to get to it, but they eventually start talking about LAN.
It's around the 5:20 mark
"It's important to have a truly disconnected LAN mode," is one of the best lines in the whole video. Plenty of other games offer LAN functionality in theory. However, it often falls apart in practice. Now, it's usually slapped together as a hidden function in the "Create Custom Game" lobbies for online play. And, as we've noticed ourselves, that doesn't always work seamlessly. Another big plus is this means you don't have to be logged into Xbox Live to have a LAN party. That's less time fumbling with logging everyone in and more time playing. The final bonus is the split-screen option. Nothing shuts down a LAN party like having too few displays for all of the players. The current generation is a lot less friendly to split-screen and LAN, so it's really refreshing to see Gears of War 4 handle it so well.
