For the record, this is not the fan.

We can always use more good news in our lives, and while this isn’t exactly a “good” story, it is wholesome and nice, and sometimes that’s just as good.

We can’t call it a good story, of course, because it starts with a tragedy: last month, a 26-year old man named Trevor Eastman posted on the Borderlands subreddit, describing his recent diagnosis with cancer and the fact he might not live to see Borderlands 3 released. He asked – very nicely – if it would be at all possible for him to get an early copy of the game.

"I've been a huge fan of Borderlands for a long time now, and I don't know if I'll live to see Borderlands 3. If there's any possible way that someone could find a way for me to be able to play it early... I would be forever grateful."

And proving that the only really bad thing about Gearbox is their CEO, the company agreed: and ultimately they sent a representative with a copy of the game so he could enjoy it a bit earlier than the rest of the world. But the story doesn’t stop there: they also let him name and write the description for one of the many, many new guns that populate the wasteland. That gun is called “The Compressive Trevonator”, a unique legendary shotgun with a 28% weapon charge boost and +75 splash damage radius that can switch between hot and cold damage. And his description?

"Trev is gunna get you!"

…he at least admits it’s cheesy, so that’s cool.

Anyway, while it’s sad we’re in this situation at all, it’s always cool how Gearbox and their fans will come together to help one of their own in their time of need. The rest of us will have to wait till September 13th to try The Compressive Trevonator for ourselves, though.
