Gearbox Announces Borderlands 3

That's a real shocker right there.

Gearbox has been known for a lot of things – and most of them aren’t actually very good. Perhaps the only unequivocally good thing the studio has worked on in a long time was the Borderlands series, which has been on something of a hiatus since Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which was five friggin' years ago… basically a lifetime in the world of triple-A games.

But fans who have been clamoring for Borderland’s unique combination of randomized loot, insane enemies, and stupid humor need clamor no longer: Gearbox is back, baby, and they’re bringing Borderlands 3 with them.

The trailer reveals just about everything you’d expect from a Borderlands game: four new characters, the return of the previous eight, the ol’ NPC’s, and lots and lots of guns, shooting, and violence. But there were a few new things you could spy in the margins: new big monsters that I didn’t recognize (although they might have shown up in the pre-sequel, which I've never played), some sexy new vehicles to crash anticlimactically into some rocks in a panic, new abilities (like guns with legs, which were adorable), and of course the fact that apparently this game will have you travel to multiple worlds, which, again, as far as I’m aware is a series first.

All that said, it’s an exciting but unsurprising reveal, which means we’ll have to wait until April 3 for more concrete information about the game, which will hopefully include details about the big bad this go around, the world’s you’ll be visiting, and of course, who exactly you’ll be playing.

Oh, and of course, how expensive the season pass will be. Probably pretty expensive, this is Gearbox we’re talking about here. And pre-order bonuses, can’t forget that; wouldn’t be a Gearbox game without some of those.

At least it’s not a battle royale.
