Over the past couple of years video games have started to grow up. Communities are created around the idea to support and advocate for victims of sexism, machoism, online harassment, ethnic diversity, and several other hot-button topics.
This year at the annual Game Developers Conference, many issues ranging from how to write better characters to narrative approaches for a variety of genres, will be discussed. In addition to those typical panels and talks, GDC will also be speaking about Beyond Graphics: Reaching the Visually Impaired Gamer, How to Subversively Queer Your Work and Women Don't Want to Work in Games (and Other Myths.)
The importance of these issues as the industry grows are vital. Simon Carless, executive vice president of UBM Tech Game Network tells CBS, It's something that in some way or another has always been part of the conference, but it's something that we've found interest in genuinely continue to grow as the industry has become more diverse and inclusive.
Hopefully, we - as a collective gaming community - continue to mature and take these discussions seriously. As evidence these topics are crucial, PAX is hosting a diversity lounge in hopes of addressing and shining a much needed light on these industry-wide issues.
