Just short of 30 years ago, Gauntlet was mercilessly eating quarters as one of the first 4-player arcade games, and as a challenging hack-and-slash dungeon crawler. The series has been rebooted several times and is the undeniable blueprint used in Blizzard's Diablo series.

Rather than remaking a modern Gauntlet in the image of Diablo in some kind of Ouroboros game design, the 2014 version of Gauntlet looks to recapture the classic arcade feel. Arrowhead Game Studios is however adding online multiplayer to the series and procedurally generated dungeons. This will also be the first in a series of digital only releases from the WB Games Vault. In 2009, most of Midway (who acquired titles like Gauntlet from Atari) was purchased by Warner Bros after they went bankrupt. This could very well mean future Vault titles like Spy Hunter, Smash TV, Joust, or Rampage

It is somewhat surprising that this release is Steam exclusive, given the success of downloadable arcade-style games on consoles. Perhaps they're banking on the older PC demographic that remembers the arcade original. Whatever the case may be, make sure to check your food for poison first when the game releases later this year.
