Many of us know him as the Cynical Brit or just that one video game critic but to most gamers, he is TotalBiscuit, a beloved streamer and Youtuber. After a long fight with cancer, John Bain passed away at age 33 on May 24, 2018. As a man with over 2.2 million Youtube subscribers and a fan-base that has enjoyed endless hours of entertainment, he will be dearly missed.
According to a Reddit post on May 1st Reddit, he told his fans that his cancer was terminal and that he didn't have long left with us. This post was also his way of announcing his retirement and what he stated as "his last public health update". His wife Genna posted a beautiful poem on Twitter yesterday to honor her husband's passing.
Becoming popular in 2010, he began his rise to YouTube fame with videos and reviews mostly catering to smaller indie titles, even posting lists of Steam games he thought were worth playing. Bain was a huge voice in the argument against AAA publishers that didn't care about the content they put out, only the revenue that the game brought in.
After being diagnosed in 2014, Total Biscuit's cancer went into remission after treatment but unfortunately returned and spread to his liver and spine. These complications are what ultimately caused him to go terminal, as he no longer was responding to his treatment. Fans and critics alike mourn his passing, he was a talented entertainer and a voice for smaller studios. Some developers even contributed him to being the inspiration behind their careers.
We at GZU are saddened by this news, but if we have one thing to remember him by it's this, the ever popular "Lul" meme. Even though Total Biscuit has passed, he will live on in Twitch chats for years to come. Thank you, Total Biscuit, for all you have brought to our community.
