To focus briefly on some good in the world, last week, the folks at GDQ hosted their online-only 2020 Summer Games Done Quick marathon, a yearly event where speed runners and video game fans come together to raise money for Doctors Without Boarders, and one of the few thin lines that keep me from giving up on the games Industry altogether. The fundraising efforts of the GDQ folks make them the top donor for Doctors Without Borders, whose mission now is more important than it ever was before, what with the global pandemic killing hundreds of people every day.
Well, this year, despite not having the energy of the crowd to really spice things up, both streamers and donators stepped up, and by the end of the week they had raised $2,308,922.84 for charity. While they didn’t break any records this time around, the fact that people were able to give so much when the economy is in such shambles is definitely still heartwarming and impressive.
They also run another event, called Awesome Games Done Quick, in January. It’s doubtful that event will be in-person either, but as long as people are streaming and donating, it doesn’t really matter where they hold it.
God bless everyone involved.
