Happy Halloween, folks! People are celebrating the holiday in a myriad of ways, though they have also been wary of the spooky apparitions lurking around every corner. Personally, I plan to purchase/loot some candy post-steakhouse date to celebrate. But the gamer in me yearns to pick up a game and play throughout the evening hours, just to give myself a fright. Fortunately, there are plenty of games available that would fit the criteria, in case you're hungering for frightening title.
So without further ado, here are our top five 2016 Halloween game picks:
Corpse Party
The original version of Corpse Party, which was considered a PC indie title way back when, finally released - in English - onto the Steam platform, thanks to the localization efforts of XSEED Games. This cult classic, while designed in a way that may not initially strike fear into the hearts of players, instead relies on bold, authentic voice acting, deep characterization, and horrific sound effects as it thrusts you into a haunted school dubbed Heavenly Host. The PC version lacks the anime art-style present in the PSP version, so your imagination will need to do a lot more legwork by comparison. That being said and I promise you, the title is worth it. Highly recommended.
Yomawari
Maybe I have a thing for cutesy horror games - I'm unsure on the statement - but this anime-styled horror game, released just a few days ago, managed to catch some attention. Yomawari stars a little girl, who encounters a tragic accident in the midst of an evening stroll with her dog Poro. Later that night, her sister goes missing, prompting the girl to venture out into the darkness to search for her loved ones. Unfortunately, spirits tend to not only venture but haunt the alleyways and streets of her hometown, a place where she finds herself utterly alone.
The title is short, offering stealth and survival elements, but the atmosphere, sound effects, and hand-drawn textures make the game worth the $20 it's asking for. Don't expect scary but instead eerie.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location
Ah, this one. Despite catching complete and hell for its mere existence, Sister Location, which pits you in Circus Baby's Pizza World where you are fit into the role of a late night technician, people are generally praising this title, with many of them claiming that it's the best FNAF game, featuring actual levels and fresh mechanics that are still capable of giving you many a fright. If you're interested in massive changes to the FNAF formula, then you should indeed shell out the $7.99 it's asking for.
SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell
This is... quite the quirky game, to say the least, and one suitable for Halloween. Not because it's spooky or scary or anything like that, but instead deals with parkour, beer, and demons.
Yes, it stars a man who has lost an arm during a brawl with Lucifer, all for the sake of beer - more importantly, a limited edition he can no longer obtain. After replacing his lost arm with a demon's he heads to hell in search of his beer.
Must I repeat myself? For the sake of beer.
Beer.
Is good. And stuff.
Again, since SEUM focuses on demons and hell, it makes for great Halloween fodder, does it not? Not everything needs to be spooky, sheesh.
DOOM
Finally, we have the mayhem FPS that is known as DOOM. Sure, I could be referring to the older titles of the franchise, but in actuality, I'm laser-focused on the 2016 version, which is all sorts of fun and gruesome. It sways away from the typical modern FPS formula in favor of speed, rage, and all out gore. After all, if you're in the shoes of pissed off DOOM marine, trapped in who knows where... what would you do? That's right, you'd beat the living crap out of everything around you. And yes, while there is a storyline to explore... you might very well find yourself ignoring the plot, with your attention instead centered on spraying the blood of demons who dare encounter you.
By the by, if you approach your environment in a slow and cautious fashion, you're playing it wrong. Definitely worth every dollar it's asking for.
Danganronpa Series
Alright, so while I've mentioned only five Halloween-worthy offerings on the list, there is a series I'd like to include, which has already been revealed above: Danganronpa. However, it's a bit of an older series, so I'd like to include this entry as an honorable mention. Why? Well, while the original titles released only a couple of years ago, the Steam versions of the mystery visual novel made their debut this year. And boy are they worth every penny. It's a horror title all right, oozing with murder, accusations, and character attachment. Oh, and a bear that you end up loving to hate.
The worst part is that you'll find yourself liking most of the characters, but unfortunately, who dies remains to be a complete mystery. With interactive and engaging gameplay - featuring the Truth Bullet system and class trials (think Phoenix Wright series here) - it's difficult not to be sucked into Hope's Peak Academy.
And there you have it, all five - well, six - titles for your enjoyment! Do you agree? Disagree? Curious? Plan to pick any of them up while to enjoy?
