Earlier this November, Overwatch developer and winter weather phenomenon Blizzard was rather coy during an interview when it came to discussing future expansions for their game. They had confirmed that it would cost money to buy, a straight-up triple-A developed game, but when it came to future hero releases or maps, well… they were iffy at best when it came to filling us in.
But now, it seems, they’ve decided to just be straightforward with us: and thankfully the news is good. Check it.
Yep: while the plan for future maps and characters is fuzzy, we can at least be sure they’ll be free, if nothing else. Great news for fans, of course, but it does beg the question of how Blizzard plans to monetize. World of Warcraft has subscriptions and a cash shop, Diablo 3 had the cash market, Heroes of the Storm has a cosmetics store, Hearthstone has purchasable packs, and even StarCraft 2 has expansions that cost money. Blizzard doesn’t have a record of making games that are free to play completely the moment they land in your lap (anymore), so… cosmetics, maybe? Hard to say.
But at least where it matters, it’s free. Thank goodness for that.
