So FunPlus, a global media and social gaming publisher, recently established a $50 million investment fund in order to grow and promote exceptional indie artists and developers.
According to Dan Fiden, CEO of FunPlus:
"Our new initiative is more than just a developer fund. It's an exciting opportunity to invest in the future of indie gaming. By identifying and supporting great ideas and talent with our resources and expertise, we're making a concrete investment in the people that will define our industry."
The publisher's first move in this endeavor? Well, it made a "substantial" investment and formed a long-term partnership with Sirvo Studios, an up-and-coming studio established by Ryan Sullivan, Jamie Antonisse and Asher Vollmer (who is known as the developer behind Threes). The first game to receive the investment? Guildings, a "fantasy adventure in a world of wizards and wifi."
Vollmer states:
"We're so honored to be working with FunPlus on this project. They provided a generous investment that will help us turn our crazy ideas into a reality.
We're in the business of games that don't follow established conventions, and we admire FunPlus not just for being willing to go on this journey with us, but for being enthusiastic about risks that we're taking."
It's a good idea to promote indie devs, but I have to wonder, is this funding only limited to mobile and social gaming? Hopefully not!
