The rap game isnt easy. But one little blue haired dude is making it into a real rags to riches story. The team behind the popular rhythm game Friday Night Funkin has announced a Kickstarter campaign to make it into a full game. And it reached funding (and a whole lot more) almost instantly.

Officially titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game, the Kickstarter set a goal of $60,000 for funding. Should the goal be met, theyd produce the popular free to play rhythm game into a full-fledged, standalone title with 60+ song, upgraded graphics, animations, and mechanics.

In less than a day, the campaign has not only met their funding goal, but exceeded it, reaching (at time of writing) over $510,000. With a long list of additional stretch goals available, this unlocks funding for a mobile ports, a sharing network, a custom character builder, and fully animated cutscenes. Should funding continue to rise, goals adding online multiplayer, and various tiers of extra weeks aka songs, will be added.

What IS Friday Night Funkin Anyway?

For those who never caught wind, Friday Night Funkin is a viral rhythm game available online. The main plot centers around the protagonist, Boyfriend, as he engages in rap battles to win the affection of his girlfriend. Each level, represented in the form of a week, pits him in against various characters in three songs. Our favorite is Week 4, where he competes against The Mom, a demonic pop star.

Originally, the game was a tech demo of sorts, developed by a group of Newgrounds users. It was made for a Ludum Dare challenge, an annual challenge to produce a game in only 48 hours. After the event ended, development continued and additional content was added over time. As such, there are various Newgrounds references in the game, from background characters to rapping against various mascots for the platform.

The group just released an update, adding in Tankman (the Newgrounds tank driver) as a rap rival.

The game blew up online for a combination of its appealing art style, funky music, and interesting narrative. This led to video game lets play videos, community made mods, and more, giving the game a sort of viral status online.

We couldnt be happier for the developers behind Friday Night Funkin. Theyve made something that the people like, and now theyre going to get the funding they need to work on it for as long as they need. The indie game market is a tough one, so were glad to see them succeed.

If you want to play the current version, its available for free through the web browser on Newgrounds and Itch.io. The game is so popular that the recent update actually caused the Newgrounds server to crash. So depending on when youre trying to play, expect some connectivity issues there. If you want to support development of the full game, you can do so on their Kickstarter page.
