Interesting news for gamers on the horizon. Turns out France has gotten pretty innovative with technology lately (refer to the 3D models as part of the Goetia campaign) as a start-up company, named Catopsys, and the Paris R&D arm of media agency Ogilvy have joined together to create a unique project that allows virtual reality projection around your room.
The project, deemed the Immersis projector, can be easily hooked up to a computer (or TVs, tablets, and other computer monitors) and features a single fish eye lens capable of projecting 180 degrees of virtual reality. The projector also supports full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and features HDMI / DVI ports.
So how exactly does it work?
The projector works by deforming a panoramic image based on several factors, such as the 3D model of the resulting area, the point of view of the user, and the optical system used. The image is then projected, creating an image that is close to reality in your own room.
This can be considered the better version of the multiple-monitor projection, as many gamers use multiple monitors to immerse themselves better. But the purpose of this projector is just to make the games that much more immersive, and to allow friends and family to watch from wherever they'd like in the room.
Additionally, the creators are offering an SDK for game developers and the project already supports Unity 3D, Unreal Engine, and a universal plugin that allows developers to enable support for their games onto the Immersis projector.
The best part about this project is that Nvidia has already jumped on board with the creators, and that the project is already fully backed.
This projector could be potentially be amazing for gamers, hands down. But the only problem I see is that this would work best for first person... not that great for third.
Otherwise I would have so much fun with the Immersis projector if I were playing Final Fantasy XIV.
