A wise but forgettable person once said that the best things in life are free. Which is absolutely true--especially when it applies to video games and there aren’t any hidden costs involved. Someone at Yacht Club Games agrees, because their wildly successful title Shovel Knight is about to receive a gigantic update that introduces a new challenge mode, a new story, and a new knight to play--all for free!

To be released for all versions of the game in September 17th--assuming you’ve beaten the game first, of course--Plague of Shadows introduces you to the Plague Knight, a masked, grenade-wielding warrior who can fly, create shields, and do other useful tricks to defeat whatever challenges get in his… her… its way.

Just… look at the trailer.

It looks rather fantastic! And did I forget to mention it was free? Because it’s totally free. Play to your heart's content!

I have to say, I didn't expect this kind of generosity from the Shovel Knight team. Yes, they have a pretty good history of generosity--even the BattleToads update thing was free, even though they could have charged a few bucks for it on nostalgia alone--but this looks big. Real big. And there probably aren't any new copies of Shovel Knight being sold, so it's not as if it'll give em' much money...

...but then, if CD Projekt Red has taught us anything, it's that even a generous company can still make money hand-over-fist. And if you're going to follow an example, make it that one.
