Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, UK product director Sean Decker had this to say:
"We are extremely happy to be working with Edge Case Games. Wargaming and Edge Case Games have been looking for a way to partner for years. They have a great background that fits with Wargaming's future plans in new games - they have built and run free-to-play, vehicle-based MMOs, built on the Unreal tech stack."
We know next to nothing about this upcoming vehicle-based MMO, but hearing about its existence isn’t exactly surprising. World of Tanks has a long and semi-proud history of machine-based games (World of Warships and World of Warplanes for example), and with the United States gearing up for our “Space Force”, it only seems natural they would partner up with a team like Edge Case Games to make the inevitable “Space of WarSpaceShips” or whatever they wind up crafting.
Also considering World of Tank’s famously awful monetization systems, where people have to buy the best tanks and then buy the best ammunition to fire from those tanks, we can safely assume this MMO is not one that’s going to be exactly consumer-friendly. But I’d love to be proved wrong.
In any case. Wargaming said they weren’t currently looking to buy out any more studios, so, don’t expect them to wind up in the news anytime soon again.
