Forza Motorsport Developer Turn 10 Steps Away from Loot Boxes

Good, they were driving me crazy.

I’m not big into racing games, but I am big into any and all news involving loot boxes. And it was because of loot boxes and loot boxes alone that I had an eye on Forza Motorsport 7, a racing game from Turn 10 Studios that used “prize crates” to hand out cars, mods, gears, and badges to players. It was a pretty crappy system (not Star Wars Battlefront 2 levels of crappy, but crappy all the same) that nobody liked, and now as the gaming industry slowly retreats from loot boxes, Studio 10 will be as well, as they’ve just announced they’re removing both the prize crates and the premium in-game currency, “tokens,” from both Forza Motorsport 7 and the upcoming Forza Horizon 4.

"While we’ve never charged money for prize crates in Forza Motorsport 7, their presence in the game has continued to be a source of controversy. The overwhelming feedback has been that this system feels out of place in the game. After careful consideration, we have decided to completely remove prize crates from Forza Motorsport 7. Similarly, paid tokens—which were a part of previous Forza games—will not be coming to Forza Motorsport 7 or Forza Horizon 4."

Good news for racing fans, but it’s not as if they can just flip a switch and get rid of the loot boxes. It’ll be a slow process, starting with the unlocking of 100 previously “exclusive” cars, and removing cars from prize crates altogether. Everything else will still be earned via prize crates, but soon that will change. For the time being, you can at least be happy knowing that it’s now impossible to have any kind of competitive edge over your enemies due to some lucky draw via a loot box.

Looks like games are almost starting to play like games again. What an age to be alive, eh?
