I think it’s finally time we can declare PUBG the loser in the battle royale wars. It may have invented the genre, but much in the way DOOM trounced Castle Wolfenstein, it’s Fortnite: Battle Royale that’s going to be remembered as the game to really master the formula. It had everything going for it - it had more approachable graphics, better servers and connectivity, a lot more personality, and, of course, the fact that it was free can never be underestimated. Now it’s doing so well that the developer has been shutting down their other games and hosting big parties to celebrate their success, while PUBG is still struggling to release an anti-cheat system that won’t completely ruin the game.

But if you think Fortnite’s domination is limited to the console and PC gaming world, think again. Because even though both Fortnite and PUBG have mobile apps now, Fortnite has once again taken the lead. While it’s only just now started releasing invitations to try out the public beta, the game has already rocketed up the App Store’s ratings. In fact, it’s already second only to Candy Crush – freaking Candy Crush – in the Top Grossing Games category. And that’s not all: It’s #1 in the “top free games” category, and is fourth in overall profitability: behind only Netflix, Pandora, and Candy Crush Saga.

It beat out Pokemon Go, all of Nintendo’s games, Clash Royale, Clash of Clans, everyone. Nothing but the King could make it stop, and even then, only barely. While it seems unlikely that Fortnite will be able to overthrow the casual giant that is Candy Crush, given it’s hardcore focus… well… it’s better primed to do just that than any other game on the iTunes store.

I never would have guessed this when Fortnite first announced its Battle Royale mode, but sometimes the strangest things surprise you. I guess we can’t completely laugh off Paladins just yet.
