There hasn’t been enough said about Epic Game’s greed when it comes to Fortnite.
I think the fact the game is free-to-play and updates come out regularly really distract people from the fact that Epic Games is kinda scummy. In fact, their refusal to put Fortnite on Google Play has routinely put people in danger when they try to download the game from there and get some phishing malware instead. And their latest scheme, the “Support-a-Creator” event, reeks of a similar greed, even if on paper it sounds like a good deal.
The “Support-A-Creator” event basically adds a tab to the game’s item shop where, you can enter the Epic tag of a creator you want to support – like a YouTuber, a streamer, a cosplayer, etc. – and in doing so, you’ll ensure that the creator gets a cut of the v-bucks purchase you make. Sounds like a cool, harmless thing to do, right?
Well, there are a few caveats: the rate is rather atrocious, for one, with creators earning five real American dollars for every 10,000 v-bucks spent… which is worth about 100 bucks in the Microsoft store. So it’s basically a 5 percent cut. “Hey, that’s free money”, you might be thinking, but to qualify for the program you have to release new Fortnite content at least once every thirty days and have at least 1000 followers on a major social platform. You’ll also have to follow a special code of conduct in order to qualify for these payments.
So, basically, they’re paying nickels on the dollar to bribe content creators to keep making Fornite stuff, while controlling them with the code of conduct, and encouraging fans to spend more money because they want to support their favorite online personalities. It’s kind of scummy when you break it all down like that.
Still, “it’s free money”, so if you want to support your favorite Fortnite creators while buying cosmetics and crap… now you can.
Good for you.
