Here’s a news flash for ya: Fortnite is popular.
And if you thought it was the kind of popular that was going to fade anytime soon, well, I’ve got bad news for you chump: the numbers are in, and, apparently, Fortnite is the kind of popular that only Minecraft could surpass, and even that might change soon. Because according to Bloomberg, Fortnite has earned around $2 billion (you read that right, with a B) this year alone… which means that the developer, Epic Games, is now worth between 5 to 8 billion big ones, when you include all of Epic’s other business products and the Unreal Engine. It also means CEO and founder Tim Sweeney is a billionaire. Again, with a capital B.
That said, Bloomberg was even more ambitious with that number later on. However, when they said that if you consider the trading multiples of peers such as Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard, Epic could be worth as much as $14 billion. Let all 11 of those digits sink in real deep.
As a point of comparison: when Tencent first bought 40 percent of Epic Games in 2013, they were worth around $825 million, when League of Legends was making a billion in microtransactions alone.
So yeah. It’s kind of a big deal. No wonder other companies keep trying to steal the formula.
