I have a personal fondness for Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Not because I like the game, god no, you couldn’t pay me to play it myself, I have no spine and I’d have a heart attack three minutes in. No, I like it because I have a great personal fondness for it’s creator, Scott Cawthon. If you haven’t heard the story behind the creation of Five Nights, I strongly suggest you read up on it; it’s a tale of struggle, heartbreak, and triumph over mounting forces of adversity. Scott suffered through countless failures and humiliating defeats before he became the horror game God he is today, and I want to support him, even if I never play his games, ever, oh god no.
Well, over the weekend, we got a reason to love him even more: his sense of humor. Scott apparently got it in his head to troll his fans, and the results are hi-larious.
Here’s what happened: last Sunday, Scott posted on the Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 Steam Page stating that the game was now canceled; it had been hacked and released for free on a different website. The internet, naturally, exploded; but when people went ahead and examined the ‘leaked’ Five Nights at Freddy’s, they found it wasn’t exactly what they expected.
Rather than the actual Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, the game was a re-skin and shorter version of one of Scott Cawthon’s earlier games, There is no Pause Button—a short flappy-bird-isk game where you have to jump over pits and other traps while your character automatically charges to the right. The leaked version of the game had a Freddy Fazbear mask crudely shoved on the top of the player avatar, and was otherwise exactly the same.
It wasn’t long before people realized he’d been trolling them. Still, the outcry was so intense he actually clarified his original post asking everyone to ‘take a chill pill’ and enjoy the mini-game he’d made.
For what it’s worth, you can download the troll game here for free.
As pranks go, it’s a little mistimed since it’s not April 1st, but still all in good fun. Besides, it means a free game, short as it may be, and that’s always nice. Shine on, you crazy diamond, just… finish Five Nights 3 on time, okay? I may never play it but I never grow tired of watching Youtubers play it.
