The Game Awards was last night, and while there were certainly awards doled out (Overwatch won best game? Wow, where are my surprised-pants), the real meat of the evening came not from celebrating 2016 (which sucked), but rather, looking forward to 2017 and all the hopefully great things will be coming out of that year. For example, Mass Effect Andromeda, which got a 5-minute gameplay trailer during the awards, which I’ve posted below for your viewing pleasure.
First thought: how is it possible that their talking animations have gotten worse on the next-generation of consoles? Geez, did you see the pathfinder’s face? It looked like she was wearing a rubber mask. If that’s how awkward talking is going to be, can you imagine what the romance sequences will be like? Surreal is what.
And look, the Mako is back! I mean they call it the “nomad” but everyone knows it’s just the Mako.
They also showed off a new batman-style investigation tool, the conversation tree, combat, the new crafting system and resource gathering (save me, lord), and other small little teases. Perhaps most importantly, it shows how your character can be crushed, eaten, sniped, and burnt alive with a plethora of new weapons and enemies you’ll have to face while exploring the galaxy.
I have to admit, despite the ugly faces, I was excited for this game until I heard about the crafting. I’m not really a fan of scavenging resources, so the fact that it seems necessary really bums me out. But, I’ve gone this far in the Mass Effect world – why stop now?
…although we did see a lot of mecs in this trailer. I thought the whole point of the ending was that we fused and all became biomechanical. How’s that gonna play out?
Hmm.
