With Nintendo having made several announcements well before E3 2017 that were cool but not quite earth-shaking, it was my hope that the Big N was saving some high-quality dirt for their big E3 presentation. I wasn't wrong, per say, given that the new Metroid games are huge deals, but a lot of the other big announcements were less-than-thrilling.
For example the new story trailer for Fire Emblem Warriors, a game that I was genuinely excited for until they released this cliche, honestly fairly cringe-worthy story trailer to show of the paper-thin plot of this future game... a game that will still probably play well, but... I mean, here, just watch it.
So a few things to unpack here, first, the entire plot can be summarized as "Bad dragon comes, ruins day". The kids even have a dead parent as motivation, if "apocalyptic bad dragon" wasn't good enough to get their butts in gear. Secondly, that good, protective dragon can't be all that useful if it allowed something like this to happen in the first place, seems like it really dropped the ball on this one. Third of all, fine, I can get behind the idea that random heroes from other universes would just show up and be all "Yeah this is worth my time", but how come Nintendo decided the best way to communicate their characters, motives, what have you, was to have them spout painful one-liners about the power of friendship? No one plays Dynasty Warrior's games for friendship, and no one plays Fire Emblem for it either: they're in it for the matchmaking.
But okay, so they dropped the ball on this one. But at least they gave us 30 minutes of gameplay to get us hyped again.
And it did work, to be fair. Maybe I would be willing to sit through friendship speeches...
...but maybe not this commentary. Muting is recommended.
