Keep in mind that we are in the midst of Patch 2.26, so we still have a little while before it hits. Anyway, during the Looking Heavensward panel at PAX East, director and producer Naoki Yoshida was asked about new content. He goes on to introduce The Palace of the Dead, which is based on "The Deep Dungeon" and can be progressed through either solo or with a party of up to four players (assuming you can duo or trio then).
Here is the description:
"Recently discovered in The Black Shroud, the Palace of the Dead is a bottomless dungeon populated by an army of undead souls. Those who dare brave the depths will face an ever-changing layout protected by powerful magicks which will sap their very strength."
The leveling system will be entirely different and item level will be nonexistent. So everyone can participate, no matter what! The floors will become more difficult as you descend, being only slightly different each time entered. For example, some floors will restrict magic and others will have a boss gauntlet. There will be stones where you can buff yourself, but there will also be traps, so you may want to be careful with those. Your progress, however, will be autosaved on certain floors, kinda like that dungeon in Final Fantasy X-2.
The solo players will see how far they can get on their main job, and in future updates, more floors will be added, as well as a ranking system for parties and individuals by job. Just a heads up, other content like this will be available in the future, such as the Treasure Map dungeon that has been circulating for some time now that will be hitting Patch 3.3. The next Letter from the Producer Live, which will detail 3.3, will be streamed April 29, at 12:00AM (midnight) PST.
