Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG that continues to flourish, even with its faults, and it certainly has its faults (such as sticking to the same formula - just about anyway - for three years is one of them). Hopefully, with Stormblood on the way, things will change.
However, this is not what this article is about. Oh no - in fact, if you recall, the Final Fantasy franchise's 30th anniversary is this year, and Square Enix has been celebrating in a myriad of ways. One way the corporation is celebrating? Having one of its games acting as inspiration for a Japanese live-action TV drama. That's right, a new drama is on the way, with Final Fantasy XIV acting as a plot device.
The drama is called Final Fantasy XIV: Daddy of Light (or Father of Light).
According to Model Press, the show highlights the bond that steadily grows between a father and son during their careers as adventurers in Final Fantasy XIV. It's actually inspired by a Japanese blog by a Final Fantasy XIV player.
He wrote a series of entries (all compiled in "The Father of Light") that revolved around his 60ish-year-old father playing the MMORPG.
Final Fantasy XIV: Daddy of Light will feature Ren Osugi (who happens to be in many of Beat Takeshi's films) as the father. The son will be played by Yudai Chiba.
The drama will blend both in-game and "IRL" scenes.
Final Fantasy XIV: Daddy of Light will air in Japan sometime this April.
