When we talk about "games as a service," the first thing that typically leaps to mind is something like Rainbow Six, Destiny, or the upcoming Anthem. A name typically not considered is Final Fantasy XV, which, despite being released close to a year and a half ago in 2016, is still going strong thanks to a series of free and paid expansions that Square Enix has been releasing fairly periodically since launch. And because of these updates, one could argue that the game doesn’t really have an ending yet.
But apparently, that’s something director Hajime Tabata is looking to change, as at a fan greeting today, he asked the crowd aloud (which would later be repeated on social media by witnesses) if they wanted a “super happy” ending for the story, or a “super bad” one.
While we don’t know what the crowd responded with, it’s an interesting moment: it reveals that the story isn’t quite done yet (and even now, it might not be close to over – remember how many Final Fantasy Xlll iterations there were?), and moreover, there’s still some indecision over what direction to take things. I don’t play the games, but I imagine if I did, I would be pretty excited about these revelations.
Guess we’ll have to wait to see what the audience thought.
