Final Fantasy and Yokai Watch Team Up

Final Fantasy and Yokai Watch Team Up

Which certainly qualifies as something!

Iffin' you weren't aware, Yokai Watch is pretty damn popular over in Japan. And while it's picked up some traction over here in the states, with the cartoon and the game being localized, it still hasn't hit quite the level of popularity over here than it has in Japan. And while it might not be at Pokemon levels--yet--it's certainly comparable to other big-name Japanese titles, like, say... Digimon. Or... Final Fantasy. In fact, with Final Fantasy quickly falling out of favor, as people accuse it of being money-grubbing and lacking fresh ideas, Square Enix might stand to learn a thing or two from the folks at Level-5.

Or, as an alternative to self-reflection and improving their core product, they could just take advantage of Level-5's newly discovered spotlight and team up for a big ol' crossover instead!

Final Fantasy XIV, the MMORPG that recently-ish got a much-needed reboot, has unveiled in a Niko Niko show that Yokai Watch themed mounts, weapons, and characters would be joining the game in a future update. Furthermore, in the same announcement, it was announced that Final Fantasy characters, namely the Moogle and the Chocobo, would be showing up in Yokai Watch as well!

So two of some of Japan's most beloved intellectual property, teaming up for some themed merchandise? Sounds like the kind of thing I normally wouldn't report on, because it barely counts as news! But it's been a slow news week and some of these are kind of cute (most of them are ugly, but still), so, hell--here it is. You can find more pictures here.

Bah, I shouldn't be so dismissive. There's a reason this is so popular... even if I can't figure out what it is.
