Pretty big spoiler warning, by the way.

Didn’t think there’d be a controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and yet, here we are.

Long story short: at the end of the first DLC for the game, Legacy of the First Blade, Shadow Heritage, your character hooks up with the daughter and/or son of some dude named Darius. Seems normal enough, but here’s the catch: you’re forced to be straight. That is to say, if you play the dude you get the daughter, and if you play the girl you get the son. And considering what a big deal Ubisoft made about people being able to be whatever they wanted in Odyssey, it was certainly a shock to fans who maybe didn’t want to hook up with those dweebs.

So fans have been upset, and Odyssey creative director Jonathan Dumont has gone on record as saying that maaaybbeeee they screwed up a little bit:

“Reading through player responses of our new DLC for Legacy of the First Blade, Shadow Heritage, we want to extend an apology to players disappointed by a relationship your character partakes in. The intention of this story was to explain how your character’s bloodline has a lasting impact on the Assassins, but looking through your responses it is clear that we missed the mark.”

He goes on to explain how they tried to give the player choice by making the eventual union either a romantic one or merely a forced obligation, but they did a very bad job of actually communicating that in the game itself. They also called this entire affair “humbling”, as players had clearly gotten attached to their characters and their choices, and said that this would be a learning experience for them.

And, finally, they said that in part 2 of the DLC, players won’t be forced to stay in a relationship with those two.

So, that’s cool and all, but I can’t believe Ubisoft thought they could force gay people into a straight relationship and not get some backlash. Are they really that out of touch?

…I mean, obviously they are, but it’s still a bit baffling. “Politically neutral” my ass.
