Finally, the one thing everyone was waiting for Bethesda to talk about: Fallout 76. Director Todd Howard gave the down-low about the upcoming Fallout game at this Year's E3 press event, and boy does it have our attention.
As we knew, the game takes place after the opening of Vault 76. Players are set loose into West Virginia to prosper and repopulate. According to Howard, this prequel to the series will be about four times the size of Fallout 4.
We were then shown off some gameplay. It throws us right into the wide variety of strange creatures resulting from the nuclear radiation. Creatures such as the Grafton Monster, a large, headless goliath, Strange, mushroom looking things, and gigantic flying bats with sonic blasts known as scorchbeasts. The most horrifying creature was a giant, aggressive, three-toed sloth, though.
But what IS Fallout 76? This ever so important question was finally answered. Fallout 76 is an open-world, multiplayer survival game. Instead of random NPCs and character. The other people you encounter in this world are actual people, real-life players also playing their own game. Howard emphasizes that there will be "dozens, not hundreds" of players per server, since its a scarce land, after all. He also reassures us that there will be 100% dedicated servers for the game.
The story, efforts, and abilities of your player come with you as well. This means that no matter what server you're on, of who you play with, you're things are still exactly how you left them.
The game will also include a photo mode, for taking fun selfies with you and the squad after a successful battle.
What is there to strive for? Throughout the map, nuclear missile silos lie dormant. Should you, or your enemies, find all of the pieces to the silo launch codes, you can direct a nuclear strike anywhere on the map. With significant time and effort, a player can exact the most brutal of revenge. If they also have a radiation-proof suit of Power Armor, they can then scavenge valuables from the irradiated remains of the strike zone.
You can literally nuke each other.
Howard also acknowledges that they have a history of buggy games and that a game like this is going to be VERY buggy. So they are starting what they call the Break-it Early Test Application, or BETA. If you apply for the BETA, you could play the game in a pre-release state, helping the developers figure out and resolve issues with the game.
Finally, there are collector's edition benefits. It starts with a map of West Virginia that glows in the dark, but the coolest perk is the helmet. The Power Armor Edition of the game will come with a wearable Power Armor helmet, with a functional headlight. Pricing on these editions remains unknown at this time.
Fallout 76 will be coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 14 of this year.
