Fallout 4 Sold 12 Million Copies in One Day

That's a lot of bottlecaps.

You might notice the gaming world has slown down quite a bit in the past few days--that’s no accident of happenstance, that’s a symptom of Fallout 4 coming out and developers either being too afraid to try to compete with it… or just being too busy playing it for themselves to make news. But hey, just because Fallout 4 has put the gaming world to a standstill, that doesn’t mean there’s no news--it’s just Fallout news!

Fallout 4, as you probably could have guessed, sold quite well. But unless you’re a Call of Duty game, it’s not common for developers to brag about number of copies sold--I guess, however, with CoD having bragged about being the best launch day in all entertainment for the whole year, Bethesda decided to step up and contest that claim with some statistics of their own.

According to this news post by Bethesda, on the first day of Fallout 4’s release, they sold a whooping 12 million units, not including the pre-orders. And when all those sales (including pre-order sales) are added together, it meant that on the very first day, Bethesda earned over $750 million dollars. Forget the best launch all year--that’s the best day 1 numbers Bethesda has ever gotten period. Vlatko Andonov, President of Bethesda Softworks, had this to say:

“We’re extremely proud of Todd Howard, Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios, and his experienced team of developers for their talent and dedication in creating this extraordinary game. Fallout 4 is a masterpiece in game development and storytelling, providing fans hundreds of hours of fun as they explore and are challenged by this fascinating, beautifully crafted world.”

And Todd Howard himself had the following to add:

“A huge thanks to our fans that’ve made this all possible.  After four years of development, it's not complete until our fans get to play it and make it their own. We can't wait to hear about their adventures.”

So, yeah: Sorry CoD, but really--did you expect to step up to Fallout 4 and keep the title of ‘best selling game of the year’ to yourself for very long? Ha. Cute.
