In a livestream yesterday, Fallout 4 developer Bethesda finally broke their silence regarding the upcoming feature to allow console versions of their game to be modded. While we've known for a long time this was a planned feature, we were sadly uninformed about how it would work, or what kind of restrictions the console versions would be under that the PC versions simply wouldn't have to contend with. We can hardly expect there to be adult-themed or child-killing mods, after all, on a platform owned and monitored by Microsoft.
Well, what we learned in the livestream was as disappointing as we feared, for while downloading mods is easy enough, there's some pretty strict limitations on the mods that will make it hard to transform the game in any meaningful ways.
The first, and most important limitation, is that you won't be able to use any mods larger than 2 Gigs. Additionally, any mod that borrows content from the DLC requires owning that DLC to download--although I don't think anyone is terribly surprised by that one. Also, when you play the game with mods, not only will you get a new save file, to avoid corrupting the base game, but achievements will be locked, so you can't cheese your way to those harder-to-earn achievements.
Finally, to actually download the mods, all you have to do is link your Bethesda account to your Xbox One. From there, you go to their website, look at approved mods, and download the ones you wish. Pretty simple.
Presumably, the PS4 version of mods (which is still a thing) will follow similar rules, but we don't know for sure. Bethesda said the development of the PS4 feature was still on-track for the June release. So that's nice.
Anyway. The Xbox One mods will be out tomorrow, so, get excited for that, all three of you with the console version of Fallout 4!
